Animal Wisdom

Tiberio

Personal space bubbles vary in size and importance for our animal's, just like they do for us. When we are robust and well resourced we are not overwhelmed when our bubbles are buffeted or burst. When we are fearful, overwhelm feels like a close companion.

Tiberio recently arrived in his forever home. His bubble hadn't been respected in his early life, and after a long journey he landed in a safe, but utterly unfamiliar space - the beings, the environment, the routine... everything was different. While he adjusts, his bubble is extra important as a space for him to feel safe enough to learn about his new world. Just like us, our animal friends' learning is enhanced when they are not in survival mode.

He shared two images that showed how the world felt for him. The space from the outside-world edge of his bubble to his body, was one only he could bridge. The second image showed a hand reaching into his bubble, which caused his immediate withdrawal - physically and emotionally.

It may sound paradoxical, but I felt him to be joyful and playful, even though he is presenting as frightened. The fear is a transient state - his true nature was shining through. He shared a mind movie of him exuberantly pouncing on a toy and then proudly carrying it - he wanted Frid to embrace the power of play to help him recalibrate his nervous system.

He's a lucky boy to have found someone who is both experienced and open to learning from a wide range of sources. It takes a high level of emotional self-sovereignty to stay in a space of curiosity and acceptance when a reactive animal friend struggles to be affectionate, trusting and confident. It's tempting to make it about us - what are we doing wrong, maybe we are not the right person. etc. Sometimes they just don't have the capacity to be calm and sociable at that moment.

Every small unexpected movement or sound is tipping Tiberio into fight or flight - his feeling of safety is fragile at this early stage. Time, patience and being open to infinite possibility is the futile ground his courage and self-trust will blossom in. I wish them both all the best for the journey of a thousand moments, that they are on together.

So much love to all of you open hearted animal lovers - your animal family is lucky to be part of your world.

x Suze
